AMD Earnings: Data Center Up 97% and a $17 Billion Q4 Outlook

AMD's record third quarter and a fourth-quarter forecast well above Wall Street's gave the AI chip trade fresh numbers to lean on. Its cash flow, inventory and a $1.1 billion warrant charge show what that growth is costing.

AMD earnings for the third quarter of 2026 beat forecasts on the back of AI demand: revenue rose 45% to a record $13.4 billion, and data center sales nearly doubled to $8.5 billion, the company reported on November 3. AMD then guided fourth-quarter revenue to about $17 billion, plus or minus 3%, against analyst estimates of roughly $16.2 billion to $16.3 billion, according to Yahoo Finance and investingLive. The results matter because they show AI chip demand still accelerating after a rough October for AI stocks.

Shares rose after hours on November 3 and climbed nearly 8% in premarket trading on November 4, Yahoo Finance reported. AMD stock was already up about 129% this year before the report, according to Stocktwits.

Data center is now almost two thirds of AMD

The data center segment brought in $8.55 billion, up from $4.34 billion a year earlier and 27% higher than in the second quarter, AMD's release and ServeTheHome reported. AMD credited strong demand for its EPYC server processors and the launch of its Instinct MI450 Series GPUs. Chief financial officer Jean Hu said on the earnings call that data center was about 64% of revenue, up from 47% a year ago, and that the segment's operating margin rose to 34% from 25%.

The rest of the business was weaker. Client and Gaming revenue fell 8% to $3.7 billion, with gaming down 40% to $773 million, while Embedded rose 29% to $1.1 billion, according to the release and Stocktwits.

Helios racks and a list of AI lab customers

AMD said Anthropic, Meta, Microsoft, OpenAI and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure are running workloads on its first Helios rack-scale systems, built on MI450 Series GPUs and sixth-generation EPYC CPUs. Su told analysts she expects Helios deployments to increase substantially in the fourth quarter, and said OpenAI chose AMD's Turin EPYC processors as host CPUs for its first custom accelerator platforms, according to the call transcript.

For the fourth quarter, Hu guided data center revenue up about 50% from the third quarter and Client and Gaming down more than 20%. The $17 billion midpoint implies growth of about 66% from a year earlier.

The 2027 outlook is the bigger claim

Su told analysts AMD now expects revenue to grow more than 80% in 2027, server revenue to double, and data center to exceed 80% of total revenue, according to the transcript; Stocktwits and Investing.com reported the same figures. She also said AMD plans for PC unit shipments to fall by a double-digit percentage next year, and that it has secured wafers, packaging, memory and other components for much faster growth.

A forecast that large ties AMD's results even more closely to the spending plans of a handful of hyperscalers and AI labs. Several of those buyers are raising debt to pay for data centers, and some deals involve financing from chip makers themselves, a pattern we traced in our analysis of AI circular deals.

What the beat does not show: cash and margins

Non-GAAP net income was $3.47 billion, but free cash flow in the quarter was only $554 million, and inventory reached $11.46 billion, according to AMD's release. Hu said AMD will keep investing in inventory and capacity to support growth in 2027. That is a normal choice for a company ramping a new product, and it also means AMD is carrying more of the risk if orders slow.

GAAP earnings of $1.46 a share, against $2.09 on an adjusted basis, include a $1.1 billion noncash charge for the change in fair value of warrants issued under a previously announced customer agreement, Hu said on the call. The fourth-quarter adjusted gross margin guide of about 55% was slightly below the 55.5% analysts expected and the third quarter's 56%, investingLive reported.

What the AI Bubble Index says

The AI Bubble Index read 63.3 at the November 3 close, in the Normal band, down from 64.4 a week earlier. Fragility, at 72.2, sits well above Euphoria at 62.8. Sentiment and attention remains the hottest family at 92.8, while the demand gap is the coolest at 39.6. The full breakdown is on the dashboard, and the methodology page explains how each family is built.

Strong chip sales feed the demand side of the picture, but one company's quarter does not move the reading much. The question for the index is whether earnings like AMD's keep pace with the debt being raised to buy the chips, as in Oracle's $20 billion raise this week. Our guide to AI stock market analysis covers how to judge earnings growth against valuations.

What to watch next

Whether AMD's fourth-quarter data center revenue reaches the roughly 50% sequential growth it guided. Helios shipment volumes and new customer names. Free cash flow and inventory in the next report. And Nvidia's next quarterly report, which will show whether AI chip demand is broad or concentrated.
